Antique 14k Onyx Cameo Brooch of Goddess Athena with Dragon

An exceptional antique carving in black onyx of Athena/Minerva the goddess of war and wisdom. The cameo is 30mm by 22mm carved in hardstone with a left facing Athena who has a dragon on her helmet. It is a better than average executed cameo that is high in relief carved by a master stone carver. The cameo is framed by a 14k yellow gold frame that has an engraved design. On the reverse is an early 1900's hand made safety lever clasp that is marked 14k on the top. Circa approx 1910 - 1920s range.

On the cameo subject of Athena or Minerva, she is the goddess of wisdom, warfare and the arts. She is almost always represented with a helmet or a shield and with the Aegis which is a short armour with fringes.

Measurements: 1 1/2" in length by 1 1/4" at the widest point.

Condition: Excellent. There is no chips on the cameo, not even under 10x magnification.
