Description
An antique 14k yellow gold swallow memorial locket with large bail. The front has a 3-dimensional figure of a bird on a branch that is all hand formed and etched. The swallow in Victorian symbolic language is of hope, fertility and renewal of life. Further, swallows were seen as symbols of safe return of a loved one. Because swallows migrate annually but always return home, they became a popular symbol for a sailors safe return. It is unmarked for gold content but electonically tested. The interior does not have the original glass inserts. The front has its original patina/oxidation that can be removed but has not been polished. Will polish upon request with purchase. Circa 1860's.
