Description: 14k yellow gold locket with large bail. The front has a 3-dimensional figure of a Swallow bird on a branch that is all hand formed and etched. The swallow is symbolic of hope, fertility and renewal of life. Another symbol of the love goddess, Venus, the Romans believed it was extremely unlucky to harm a sparrow. Further, the Romans believed the swallow to be a totem bird to mothers in sorrow as it was said the swallow embodied all the young, innocents who died during childbirth. Unmarked. Circa 1860's.
Measurements: 1 3/4" in length including bail by 1" wide and 1/4" in depth.
Condition: Very good. The front has oxidation that can be removed. No bezels or inserts in the locket compartment interior.
