Description
This 18k Victorian Etruscan Revival brooch is from circa 1875 featuring a stunning cameo of Mediterranean Toree del Greco red coral set in 18-carat yellow gold. It is remarkable in its exquisite craftsmanship in three-dimension carved in high relief. The cameo portrays a Bacchante goddess figure from classical mythology: a Bacchante. It is hand carved in high relief with intricate details. The frame has a sunburst like pattern with twisted wire and granulation embellishments and its antique gold patina adds to the brooch's appeal. On the reverse is a beveled glazed glass compartment / locket for this brooch to be worn as a memorial or mourning brooch. Currently the window shows a woven dark brown fabric that imitates the look of plaited hair work. Cameo jewelry was popular during the 19th century, with tourists as souvenirs from their grand tour of Italy. This is unmarked but electronically tested.
Weight: Weighs 7.7 grams without the glazed insert and 10.6 grams in gross weight.
Measurements: It measures 1 3/8" x 1 1/16" x 1/2" thick.
Condition: In very good condition consistent with age. A couple of crimped areas on the edges of the frame are noticeable upon close inspection.
