The appraisal process
THE PREPARATION All appraisal services are by appointment only at my office in Townsend MA or at your location. Prior to your appointment there are preparations you can do that will help the process go smoothly and as efficiently as possible.
- Schedule a time for your appointment first.
- Collect all paperwork and documentation such as current and old appraisals, sales receipts, certifications, laboratory reports, etc.
- Unbox jewelry that is stored in boxes if your able to, it is a helpful time and space saver.
- For on site appraisals a minimum of a 4' work space is needed with an electrical outlet near by to set up gem lab and photo taking equipment. This can be on a counter or table in an area with good lighting. A space will also be needed for the jewelry that is being appraised so it can be laid out while it's being sorted and evaluated.
THE EXAMINATION During your in-office appointment, you have the option to wait during the examination of up to three items, or you may choose to drop them off and pick them up on the same day. Each item will undergo a thorough inspection, and if required, cleaned beforehand. Detailed notes will be taken, including tests conducted on metals, observations on gemstone properties, and precise measurements. Should your assignment call for photographs, digital images are taken. Additionally, we will assess the condition of each item and identify any necessary repairs. All collected information is documented in preparation for the next steps of research.
THE RESEARCH Value conclusions for appraisals are derived from a comprehensive analysis of various factors relevant to the intended use of the appraisal. Time is invested in researching comparable items, identifying the appropriate markets, documenting findings, and formulating an opinion of value.
THE APPRAISAL REPORT All completed appraisal reports are printed, and a digital PDF version is readily available. Each report outlines the type of appraisal conducted, defines the value parameters utilized, identifies the relevant market considered, and explains the valuation approach used. Additionally, the report includes detailed descriptions of the appraised items, photographs (when applicable), and the resulting value conclusions. Additionally, the attached documentation features a definition page, a list of instruments utilized, cited references, and the appraiser's qualifications.
